Self-employed mileage calculator

If you are self-employed and use your own vehicle for work, you can claim a flat rate per business mile instead of working out your actual running costs. Enter your business miles below for the GOV.UK approved amount. It runs in your browser, stores nothing, and needs no signup. Not tax advice.

Pick a method per vehicle and stick with it. The flat rate covers fuel, servicing, insurance and depreciation, so you do not also claim those for that vehicle. And once you use the flat rate for a vehicle, you must keep using it for as long as you own that vehicle — you cannot switch to actual running costs mid-life.

The car/van first-10,000-mile rate rose from 45p to 55p for 2026/27 (from 6 April 2026). Keep a mileage log with the date, journey and business miles for each trip, so the total is defensible.

Self-employed simplified mileage rates per GOV.UK, checked 11 August 2026. These are the self-employed simplified rates; employees claim under the separate AMAP rules. Confirm your own position with GOV.UK, your accountant or bookkeeper. Not tax or financial advice.

Never be surprised by an MTD deadline again

MTD for Income Tax means four quarterly deadlines a year: 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May. We will email you before each one, with a short checklist of what to get ready. Free, and you can unsubscribe any time.

4 emails a year, one before each MTD quarterly deadline, with dates from GOV.UK. Double opt-in, no spam, unsubscribe any time. The guides stay free either way.

The approved mileage rates (2026/27)

  • Cars and vans: 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year, then 25p a mile.
  • Motorcycles: 24p a mile, flat, with no 10,000-mile band.
  • The car/van first-10,000-mile rate rose from 45p to 55p for 2026/27 (from 6 April 2026) — the first change since 2011/12.
  • These approved rates, with their GOV.UK source and our check date, are on our UK rates reference.
  • The rate covers fuel, servicing, insurance and depreciation, so you do not claim those separately for that vehicle.
  • Choose the flat rate or actual running costs per vehicle, and once you use the flat rate for a vehicle you must keep using it while you own it.

Keep a log

To claim, you need a record of your business trips: the date, where you went, the purpose, and the miles. The MTD Ready Kit workbook has a Mileage Log built in, at the same 55p and 25p rates this calculator uses, so your quarter-end total is always ready. The kit is a record-keeping tool, not tax software, and not tax advice.
