The forward-look rule catches people out. You must also register if you expect your taxable turnover to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone — for example after winning one large contract — even if your past 12 months are still under. In that case you must register by the end of that 30-day period.

You can also apply to deregister if your taxable turnover falls below £88,000. VAT-taxable turnover excludes VAT-exempt sales — check what counts on GOV.UK.

The VAT registration threshold (£90,000) and deregistration threshold (£88,000) have applied since 1 April 2024. Rolling 12-month turnover means the total of the most recent 12 months, not a tax year. Confirm your own position with GOV.UK, your accountant or bookkeeper. Rules checked against GOV.UK on 10 August 2026. Not tax or financial advice.

Keep the tax deadlines off your mind too?

Separately from VAT, we run a free list that emails you before each MTD for Income Tax quarterly deadline (7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May) with a short checklist. Four emails a year. This checker and the reminders are free either way.

How the threshold works

  • You must register once your total VAT-taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000 — this is a rolling total, checked every month, not a tax-year figure.
  • You must also register if you expect to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone (for example after landing one big contract), even if your past 12 months are still under.
  • The deadline to register is 30 days from the end of the month you crossed it; registration starts the first of the following month.
  • You can apply to deregister if your taxable turnover falls below £88,000.
  • VAT-taxable turnover excludes VAT-exempt sales and things outside the scope of VAT — check what counts on GOV.UK.
  • The current registration and deregistration thresholds, and all UK VAT rates, each with its GOV.UK source and the date we last checked it, are on our UK rates reference.

The bands this checker uses

  • Over £90,000 → you must register.
  • £76,500 to £90,000 (Approaching) → plan now and speak to an accountant before you cross.
  • £67,500 to £76,500 (Worth watching) → keep an eye on your rolling total.
  • Under £67,500 → comfortably below.

These are the same bands as the rolling VAT monitor inside the MTD Ready Kit workbook, so the free checker and the workbook never disagree. The kit is a record-keeping tool, not VAT software, and not tax advice.
